Tishomingo County: Mississippi’s Best Kept Summer Secret

From Friday night farmers markets and award-winning outdoor recreation to lake weekends and shaded hiking trails, Tishomingo County is an overlooked destination for summer travel in Mississippi. Tishomingo County offers a mix of ways to stay active while escaping the harsh Mississippi heat, like small-town events, boating, hiking, local dining, and outdoor adventure throughout the summer season.

The Return of the Tishomingo County Farmers Market

One of the most anticipated summer to fall traditions in Tishomingo County is officially back beginning May 15th. The Tishomingo County Farmers Market returns to Iuka every Friday from 4-7p.m. through October, bringing together local vendors, live entertainment, food trucks, and family-friendly activities in the heart of downtown.

Timed perfectly as the temperature cools off across Tishomingo County, the market has become a favorite way to spend time outdoors in the summer without the intensity of midday Mississippi heat. Visitors can shop local produce, baked goods, handmade products, and specialty items while enjoying rotating food trucks like Tater’s Pit Stop, Tip of the Sip Teas, and Bryer’s Suga Shack. Live music performances from artists like Marshalls Creek and Kristen Dillenger help create a lively atmosphere that draws in locals and visitors throughout the season.

There’s always something new popping up at the market, and two new activities have already been announced for upcoming dates. “Stretching at the Market” gives visitors the opportunity to participate in light standing stretches and breathing exercises before taking a walk through Jaybird Park and Downtown Iuka. Families can participate in “Kids Evening in the Garden,” a free seed-planting activity for children with supplies included.

Vendors, musicians, activities, and food trucks may vary by the week, so make sure to follow the Tishomingo County Farmers Market Facebook page for weekly updates and features.

Where to Cool Off this Summer

For visitors looking for daytime outdoor activities, Tishomingo County is full of ways to enjoy the warm weather while staying cool.

At Tishomingo State Park, recently recognized on Mississippi Magazine’s 2026 Best of Mississippi “M-List” for Best Park and Best Attraction for Kids, visitors can explore hiking trails, natural rock formations, and the calm rapids of Bear Creek. Canoeing Bear Creek remains one of the park’s most popular summer activities, known for its scenic journey through one of Mississippi’s most unique natural landscapes.

Outdoor recreation on the water is another major aspect of Tishomingo County summers. Pickwick Lake and Bay Springs Lake are popular destinations for boating, fishing, and swimming. Visitors can rent boats and spend the day cruising, or exploring the coves and scenery across both lakes. For lunch with a waterfront view, stop by Eastport Grill at the Eastport Marina and Resort or Earl’s Grille at Safe Harbor Aqua Yacht Marina, two popular dining spots for a lakeside lunch during a day on the water.
