Bear Creek Indian Mound
Natchez Trace Parkway at milepost 308.8.
Bear Creek Indian Mound, located at the northernmost point of the Natchez Trace Parkway in Mississippi, is a historic site dating back to between 1100 and 1300 AD. This solitary mound, likely used as a platform for a house or temple, reflects the ancient tradition of building homes on elevated ground to overlook the surrounding area. While the mound itself is modest in height—restored by the National Park Service to its estimated eight-foot stature—it carries significant historical value. Acquired by the NPS in 1965, the mound had been diminished by farming activities but now stands preserved for visitors to explore. Though you won’t find artifacts or relics here, the Bear Creek Indian Mound offers a glimpse into the architectural practices of the region’s ancient inhabitants.
